Bio

Dr Petri Swanepoel is a qualified Haematologist, currently employed in the Immunology Department at Ampath Laboratories. After qualifying from the University of Pretoria with an MBChB in 2009, Dr Swanepoel completed her Internship at 1 Military Hospital. She completed her community service at the Institute of Aviation Medicine and spent another year there as a Medical Officer. After completion of her term in Aviation Medicine, Dr Swanepoel started her registrar training in haematology in 2014 and completed her MMed in 2016 and her final FC Pathology exam in October 2017 through the National Health Laboratory Services at the University of Pretoria.

Dr Swanepoel gained extensive experience in autoimmune diseases, allergology, infectious serology and primary immunodeficiency syndromes during her work in Immunology, but most importantly implemented and managed the HLA tissue typing and antibody screening section in cellular immunology. She is actively involved in the immunogenetics of solid organ transplants.

Dr Swanepoel has a wide area of interests, but her foremost passion is haematological malignancies, molecular genetics with a recent interest in transplant medicine, especially tissue typing performed by next generation sequencing. She is passionate about academic learning, teaching, research and peer learning. She works well in a team of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Dr Swanepoel has developed a rare skillset, having work experience in two pathology disciplines.
