A WORD FROM OUR SPEAKER:
Drug allergy is a topic which many healthcare professionals are not very familiar with. As drug allergy reactions can range from mild rashes to severe life-threatening reactions, the fear of severe reactions can lead to unnecessary treatment restrictions for patients. Patients themselves often lack knowledge about drug allergy, leading to misunderstandings about the difference between allergy and non-allergic side effects.
In this talk, I will discuss different aspects of drug allergy relevant to clinical practice. I will give an overview of which drugs are most commonly suspected to cause allergic reactions, how to investigate them, and which are confirmed on investigation.
I will focus on the relatively common allergies to antibiotics and show how these are very often incorrectly labelled, and discuss how this can be managed in a clinical setting. Also, I will give examples of very severe, but rare reactions to drugs during surgery and anaesthesia and to excipients in drugs. Lastly, I will discuss suspected allergy to local anaesthetics and vaccines, and how allergy to these are often overestimated.
BIO:
Prof Lene Heise Garvey is a specialist in Anaesthesiology with subspecialisation in Allergology. She is cofounder and Head of the Danish Anaesthesia Allergy Centre, the Danish National Reference Centre for investigation of perioperative hypersensitivity. She is a Professor in Allergology with special focus on Anaphylaxis and Drug Allergy at the University of Copenhagen and a consultant in the Allergy Clinic, Gentofte Hospital, Denmark. She is vice chair of the Danish Society of Allergology, Secretary of the EAACI Drug Allergy Interest Group, Chair of the International Suspected Perioperative Allergic Reactions Group (ISPAR) and member of the WAO drug hypersensitivity committee.
