The severity of neutropenia is commonly classified based on the absolute neutrophil count (ANC). An ANC <1500 cells/microlitre is considered neutropenic, graded as mild (1000-1500 cells/microlitre), moderate (500-999 cells/microlitre), severe (200-499 cells/microlitre), or very severe (<200 cells/microlitre).1
As ANC drops >1000 cells/microlitre, infection risk rises, becoming life-threatening at >500 cells/microlitre. Agranulocytosis, with an ANC <100 cells/microlitre, presents a severe infection risk.1
