In 1904, at just 22 years old, Dr Yan travelled nearly 10,000 miles to South Africa to assist Chinese mining labourers suffering from severe illnesses in harsh conditions. His role as a mine physician enabled him to provide vital medical care to nearly 10,000 labourers, cementing his dedication to public health.
Dr Yan was a founding father of Shanghai Medical College at Fudan University, established 97 years ago to promote Chinese-led medical education. His approach prioritised public health and preventative care, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire students today.
The exhibition, hosted in the Adler Museum—a remarkable collection of medical history with over 40,000 artefacts—aims to evoke deep emotions and admiration for Dr Yan’s pioneering contributions to modern medicine. After its Johannesburg showcase, the exhibition will travel to the UK and the USA before the centenary celebration of Shanghai Medical College in 2027.
