Prof Claudia Gray, a paediatrician with specialised accreditation in allergology and paediatric pharmacology, has made significant contributions to the field for over 15 years. After completing her medical degree at the University of Cape Town and further specialising in London, she returned to South Africa to focus on allergology.
Currently serving as a part-time consultant at the Allergy and Asthma clinic at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and an Associate Professor in Paediatrics at the University of Cape Town, Prof Gray's responsibilities include overseeing clinics, mentoring registrars, conducting examinations, and hosting educational seminars for medical professionals. Her expertise lies in allergy pharmacology, particularly in food allergies among eczema patients, which formed the basis of her PhD research.
In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Prof Gray runs a thriving private practice in Cape Town, offering comprehensive management strategies for various allergies.
Prof Gray is deeply committed to education and regularly presents at both local and international conferences. With over 100 publications in esteemed journals and serving on the editorial board of Current Allergy and Clinical Immunology, she is a respected voice in the field.
She is also the co-editor and co-author of the South African Allergy Handbook (2017 and 2023 editions) and the author of Food Allergies in a Nutshell.
Actively involved in professional societies, Prof Gray serves as the Honorary Secretary of the Allergy Society of South Africa and contributes to allergy education through children’s books.
She has played a pivotal role in South Africa’s World Allergy Week campaigns in 2021 and 2022, demonstrating her commitment to raising awareness and advancing the field of allergology.
